Now, let’s talk about sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious no-no on a zero carb diet, but there are great alternatives that deliver sweetness without the carbohydrates. These sugar alternatives do not have an impact on blood sugar levels.

  • Stevia– Stevia is an all-natural sweetener that is derived from the leaves of the South American plantStevia Rebaudiana. This is a part of the sunflower family. Although it doesn’t taste exactly like sugar and may be more difficult to cook with, it has zero carbs, zero calories, and won’t raise your blood-sugar levels.
  • Pure Erythritol– Erythritol, made from fermented corn or cornstarch, is a common replacement for sugar in popular sugar-free, packaged snacks like protein bars and sweets. Proceed with caution, however, if you are planning to use it at home. You may experience mild digestive problems with Erythritol. Nevertheless, when used properly and milidly, it’s a great option that will not raise your blood-sugar or insulin levels either.
  • Monk Fruit– Monk fruit is a more expensive zero-carb sweetener on the market, but for good reason. It won’t cause digestive problems, has a better taste profile, is easy to use while cooking, and most importantly, won’t raise blood sugar or insulin levels either.
