Avocado is incredibly nutritious, and it’s definitely one of my go-to sources for healthy fats. It’s also a great source of complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber, and has more potassium per serving than banana. (1)

It’s amazing really how much you can do with avocado. I like to make it into guacamole, add it to my morning smoothies, or make my famous avocado toast. If you’ve never tried mashed avocado on toasted bread, you’re seriously missing out.

The perfect ripe avocado mashes perfectly and pairs well with just a bit of salt and cracked black pepper, but you could also try these other toppers to change things up:

I must emphasize how you should do the avocado mashing in a bowl, not when it’s already on the toast. This is so important but sadly, often missed. Also, be generous with the salt and pepper and don’t forget to rub garlic on the toast for just a hint of flavor.

Of course, a recipe for avocado toast wouldn’t be complete without some tips on how to make sure your avocado is perfectly ripe. You see, when it’s not quite ready yet, the texture and flavor are drastically different, so you want to time it perfectly for maximum goodness.

5 Signs that Your Avocado is Ripe and Ready to Eat

1. You can feel the seed moving around when you shake it. This isn’t foolproof, as some avocados won’t have loose seeds even when fully ripe but it’s one thing to watch out for.

2. The meat of the avocado should be easily mashed with a fork, but not to the point where it turns into mashed potatoes in two seconds.

3. The color is a bright medium green, with no darkening or bruising along the skin.

4. The outside of the fruit shouldn’t be soft, wet or collapsed in any way.

5. The meat should be slightly sweet, not bitter or tacky.

What Kind of Bread is Best for Avocado Toast?

You may think this part is a little overkill but trust me, it’s not. The bread matters. I’ve gone through plenty of options and have narrowed it down to these. In general, I recommend thick, crusty breads that aren’t too sweet.

1. Sourdough bread. Like the name suggests, has a slightly sour taste to it. It’s quite chewy, but the outer layer can be a bit tough depending on how it’s made, which is why it’s commonly used as a bread bowl. I love sourdough bread for my savory avocado toast recipes because it has a nice crisp texture when toasted.

2. Seeded bread. I love seeded bread because of the coarse texture, not to mention it browns beautifully. I use this when I can’t get my hands on sourdough.

3. French bread. Another crusty favorite with mild flavor. This is probably easier to find than sourdough and just as good if you ask me. You can’t go wrong with any of these three really.

4. Cauliflower bread. Low carb, flourless and made from cauliflower, this is the perfect toast for anyone following a paleo or keto diet and trying to watch their carbs. View recipe.

Ingredients

1 slice of your favorite bread

½ medium ripe avocado

1 garlic clove

1 tsp sliced green onions or to taste

salt, black peeper to taste

olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Toast the bread to your taste, using your method of choice.
  2. Rub the toasted bread with garlic clove.
  3. Scoop the avocado flesh in a bowl and mash very coarsely with a fork.
  4. Season to taste with salt and black pepper.
  5. Spread the mashed avocado on a toast.
  6. Sprinkle with green onion and drizzle with olive oil (if using).
