Stalled offense
There was a blocked extra point early in the fourth quarter that kept the Chiefs within three points. There was a batted down pass on third down with less than two minutes to play that led to a field goal and plenty of time for Mahomes to tie the game.
Lack of preparation. The team clearly didn't know the overtime rules in the playoffs. Many of them thought they could end the game with a touchdown on the first possession of overtime, which they couldn't -- the Chiefs were guaranteed a possession.
How much of a bonus do the Kansas City Chiefs get for winning the Super Bowl? ›Meanwhile, each Kansas City Chiefs player is slated for $338,000 in bonus pay. That's $50,500 for their Wild Card win; $50,500 for the divisional round; $73,000 for the conference championship; and $164,000 as the winning Super Bowl team.
Why did 49ers kick field goal in overtime? ›Shanahan: 49ers made OT plan before playoffs
If the two NFL teams are tied after they each get one possession with the football, though, Team 1 gets the ball for the third possession of overtime with the opportunity to win by scoring a field goal or touchdown -- without giving the ball back to the opposing team.
Historically, the 49ers have more Super Bowl championship than the Chiefs, at five wins to three. The 49ers won in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1995. The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl back in 1970.
What went wrong with the 49ers in the Super Bowl? ›Many mistakes were made by the San Francisco 49ers in their heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Among those mistakes that are being criticized is how pass heavy they were, specifically in the third quarter. Only one time did Kyle Shanahan dial up a run play for Christian McCaffrey.
How Kyle Shanahan lost the Super Bowl? ›The Chiefs got the ball back with 1:53 and led a game-tying field goal drive to force overtime. Then Shanahan decided to take the ball first in overtime and didn't communicate the decision or the new playoff overtime rules with his players.
Has Kyle Shanahan ever won a Super Bowl? ›no. This was not the time for a stemwinder. Not for a team and coach that are now 0-2 in Super Bowls, both to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and both after the 49ers held late leads — including a field-goal lead after the first drive of overtime on Sunday. “Don't have a lot of words for it,” Shanahan said.
What team has the most Super Bowl wins? ›Patrick Mahomes's net worth is estimated around $70 million.
With his career earnings, along with various investments he's made in F1 and the Major League Baseball team Kansas City Royals, Mahomes has some serious change.
Per NFL.com, Purdy — along with the rest of his teammates — stands to make $164,000 in bonus money if the 49ers win the 2024 Super Bowl.
Does Purdy get a bonus? ›Purdy received a $739,795 bonus from the NFL's performance-based pay program. The league handed out $393.8 million to players who outperformed their salary level based on their playing time. The bonus check nearly equaled Purdy's base pay last year, $889,253.
Why did Chiefs not want the ball in OT? ›The Chiefs had a plan. The players knew the plan. The Chiefs wanted the ball second, and they would have gone for two if the 49ers had scored a touchdown on the first drive.
How many overtimes are allowed in the Super Bowl? ›The same timing rules that apply at the end of the second and fourth regulation periods also apply at the end of a second or fourth overtime period. If there is still no winner at the end of a fourth overtime period, there will be another coin toss, and play will continue until a winner is declared.
Why did Shanahan want the ball? ›Shanahan's decision came down to one premise: “We just wanted the ball third,” he said. If the 49ers and Chiefs ended their possessions with the same result, the 49ers would receive the powerful advantage of winning the game with a score. Essentially, Shanahan gave the 49ers the possibility for an extra possession.
How did the Chiefs beat the 49ers? ›Mahomes' final pass, an easy 3-yard, walk-off touchdown to Hardman, who was wide open in the corner of the end zone, finished the longest season in the Chiefs' 64-year history with an unforgettable 25-22 comeback victory over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in front of 61,629 fans in the NFL's first Super Bowl in ...
How many times did the 49ers lose to the Chiefs? ›The Kansas City Chiefs are 7-7 against the 49ers all-time.
Did Chiefs beat 49ers this year? ›Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman scores winning touchdown with three seconds left in overtime. The Kansas City Chiefs have defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 to become back-to-back Super Bowl champions.
Why did 49ers choose to receive? ›We just thought it would be better. We wanted the ball third. If both teams matched and scored, we wanted to be the ones who had the chance to go win. Got that field goal, so knew we had to hold them to at least a field goal, and if we did, then we thought it was in our hands after that."
