Aalborg Akvavit is traditionally served chilled in small shot glasses. It can also be enjoyed as a sipping spirit at room temperature to fully appreciate its complex flavors.

In both the Scandinavian countries and northern Germany, aquavit is usually served chilled and unmixed, in small (tulip) glasses, and is usually accompanied by appetizers or sandwiches. Some drinkers prefer it in shots, a glass at a time, because they find the taste of aquavit difficult to accommodate.

How to Drink Aquavit. Traditionally, aquavit is enjoyed straight either chilled or at room temperature. In Sweden and Denmark, un-aged aquavit is typically served very cold in shot glasses or stemmed liquor glasses.

In Iceland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, aquavit is chilled and often drunk in a single gulp from a small shot glass. This is usually attributed to tradition. In Norway, it is not generally chilled, but enjoyed slowly.

Beer (øl) has been widely consumed in Denmark over the ages. Having a beer is an activity favoured by many Danes after work or when relaxing or socializing.

How is aquavit different from vodka? ›

In essence, aquavit is like a gin that's flavored with caraway or dill, rather than juniper. Or, for those poor souls still clinging to their vodka: Aquavit is like a vodka laced with savory herbs. It's difficult to understate how central aquavit is to the traditional tables of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Gin and aquavit, after all, are just vodkas that have been infused with spices and botanicals. Just remember, though: If it's Norwegian, please don't put it in the freezer.

Akvavit gets its distinctive flavour from spices and herbs, and the dominant flavour must (according to the European Union) come from a distillate of caraway and/or dill seed.
