How long is the university of Illinois commencement ceremony? ›

Universitywide Commencement Ceremony

This is a dignified ceremony that lasts about two hours. Academic attire is required. The universitywide ceremony will be livestreamed at go.illinois.edu/live.

Graduation day is the culmination of all the time, energy, and work that you have put into gaining your qualification, and it gives you a great chance to celebrate all that you have achieved.

Simply put, Commencement is a ceremony held once a year that honors students who just have or will soon graduate, which means completing all requirements of their degree program. Participating in Commencement does not automatically mean that a student has graduated.

The answer to “What is graduation ceremony?” is about the culmination of their academic journey and marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. It is a day of celebration, reflection, and gratitude that graduates will cherish for years to come.

Besides showing you how proud they are of all of your hard work, the graduation ceremony also gives you a chance to be a role model for your friends and children in real-time. They can see the results of all your hard work... in person! Meet your instructors and support staff!

Translating that into practical terms: the ideal length for a commencement ceremony is about 90 minutes to 2 hours in length. The absolute maximum length should be 2 1/2 hours knowing that you will get complaints for ceremonies over two hours.

Point of Commencement (POC). This is an established reference point such as a corner of the PLSS or NSRS monument to which the property description is tied or referenced.

Why is graduation called “Commencement?” It is, after all, a ceremony to mark the completion of something. The word reflects the meaning of the Latin inceptio – a “beginning” – and was the name given to the initiation ceremony for new graduates in medieval Europe.

Ceremonies for individuals are usually performed to mark a rite of passage such as Birth, Baptism or Naming, Coming of Age, Graduation, Marriage, Anniversary, Retirement, and death. Ceremonies are also performed at different times in our lives to celebrate an important occasion such as receiving a special award.

Students who do not complete high school may experience poor health and premature death. Individuals who do not graduate high school are more likely to self-report overall poor health.

If you arrive late, you may not be able to take part in the ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to run for approximately 90 minutes during which time you will have an opportunity to cross the stage with your cohort.

The All-University Commencement ceremony runs approximately 2 hours.
