Is Waze or Google Maps better in Australia? ›

Without any doubt, Google Maps offers more information overall and has more resources than Waze. But when it comes solely to driving, Waze is still the unbeatable choice. If you're seeking local destinations or specific information about businesses, Google Maps is the better help.

You can always use GPS on your mobile device regardless of an internet or cellular connection. As long as you have a charged smartphone with you, you can find your way around remote areas and foreign landscapes. GPS tracking on your phone works just as well without internet connectivity or cellular service.

Waze is better for up-to-date traffic info and frequent route adjustments based on real-time situations. Google Maps is superior for finding detailed information about places (restaurants, gas stations etc.) including reviews and browsing menus. Waze is less useful for exploration.

Different navigation apps for different routes

For planning long trips abroad, ViaMichelin or Sygic are both really great options, while if you want to muddle your way through the metropolis to a single destination, Waze is unbeatable.

Waze has around 151 million monthly active users, the WSJ notes, and focuses on providing detailed traffic data for drivers.

However, Waze does have room for improvement in terms of data consumption and the accuracy and reliability of its user content. For longer road trips, the app may consume too much data or distract too often from the actual driving. That being said, we're a fan of the app's ability to adjust routes and save us time.
