Will MFM deliver my baby? ›

We often work with a patient's regular obstetrician to develop a care plan and perform ultrasounds and consultations throughout the pregnancy. Though a patient may have several appointments with the maternal-fetal medicine specialist, the obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and deliver the baby.

The Fetal Medicine Unit (FMU) is led by a team of highly skilled specialist doctors that offer diagnosis and treatment of complications which may arise in unborn babies. Midwives form part of the team within FMU and are available for routine and specialist midwifery advice and support whilst you have care within FMU.

This unique fellowship training programme curriculum is designed to provide structured training in a university hospital as a sub specialist - along with the benefits of being trained at a tertiary referral centre for fetal diagnosis and therapy, by dedicated faculty specifically trained in fetal medicine.

You may be referred to a maternal-fetal medicine specialist if you have a pre-existing medical condition prior to pregnancy, develop a medical condition during pregnancy or have problems during delivery.

The first appointment is a consultation appointment which includes an ultrasound assessment of your pregnancy. Your MFM physician will review any medical records, surgical history, medications or environmental exposures, and prenatal labs or screening tests that may have been done.

Screening for genetic abnormalities, birth defects, growth restrictions, and more: In addition to blood tests, MFMs use advanced ultrasound techniques, fetal echocardiograms, and other tests to identify genetic problems and birth defects. This allows parents to prepare for the birth of a child with special needs.

A perinatologist is an obstetrician-gynecologist (OBGYN) who specializes in high-risk pregnancies. Perinatologists are also called maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialists or high-risk OBGYNs. They focus on pregnancies where the pregnant person or the fetus has a health complication.

The 4-year curriculum combines all aspects of MFM, including obstetrical, fetal, medical, and surgical complications of pregnancy with all aspects of clinical genetics, including prenatal, pediatric, cancer, cyto- and molecular genetics.
