Difference Between Cupcakes And Muffins
There are a lot of similarities between cupcakes and muffins. They are both small, individually portioned cakes that can be made in a variety of flavours. However, there are some key differences between the two. Muffins are denser and more like quick bread, while cupcakes are light and airy. Muffins also have a more muffin-like top (think of the classic domed muffin top), while cupcakes have a flat top. Cupcakes are always frosted, while muffins are not. This is one of the key ways to tell the difference between the two. Cupcakes are also generally sweeter than muffins. So, the next time you’re at the bakery, make sure you know which one you’re after!
Major Key Difference Between Cupcakes And Muffins
Cupcakes vs muffins, what’s the major key difference? Is a cupcake just a miniature muffin? Or is a muffin a flat cupcake? Let’s explore the key differences between these two popular baked goods.
The key difference is in the leavening agents used and in the toppings.
• Muffins are made with a leavening agent, such as baking powder or baking soda, which helps them to rise.
• Cupcakes are made with a chemical leavener, such as cream of tartar, which gives them a light and airy texture.
• Muffins are usually flavored with fruit or nuts.
• Cupcakes are usually frosted and can be flavored with chocolate, vanilla, or any other flavor of your choosing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is difference between muffin and cupcake?
Texture: Cupcakes have a lighter, fluffier texture than muffins. While cupcake batter is soft and smooth, muffin batter is thicker, resulting in a denser texture, similar to bread.
What makes a cupcake moist and fluffy?
Oil is important for keeping the cupcakes moist, but too much oil in a recipe will cause the wrapper to separate from the cupcake. Cake flour makes these cupcakes extra soft and fluffy. This recipe uses the reverse creaming method, which involves coating the flour with a layer of butter and then air whipping.
Can a cupcake be a muffin?
If you think removing the frosting from a cupcake makes a muffin, you're wrong. Here's how we see it: A cupcake is a small cake and a muffin is a small quick bread. If you can't pour the batter into an 8-in. circular pan and bake a birthday cake, then you have a muffin yourself.
Why muffins are better than cupcakes?
While most muffins aren't as healthy as we naively assume, they're still generally better for us than cupcakes. Muffins tend to use healthier ingredients like whole wheat, oat, or nut flour. There are also more gluten-free, soy-free, dairy-free, and egg-free options when it comes to muffins.
Are muffins healthier than cupcakes?
Cupcake recipes generally contain much higher levels of sugar and fat. This makes cupcakes sweeter, and juicier with finer crumbs. Muffins usually have fruit, nuts, and other ingredients mixed into the batter to compensate. Because of this, muffins are usually considered healthier than cupcakes.
