FAITH

This is part 2 of Daniel’s Fast series; please read Guide to Daniel Fast (part 1) before reading this post.
In Part 1, we discussed the motive behind the fast and the details from a spiritual standpoint. In this post, we will go into detail about the physical aspect of the food itself.
What should the portion size be?
Remember, this is denying ourselves, so we aren’t trying to overeat. We listen to our bodies and stop when we feel we are fed. We shouldn’t feel overly “full” as that defeats the purpose of the fast. There is no “portion size”. Listen to your body and use the holy Spirit as your guide.
Personal conviction:I genuinely love this fast. I am able to train my flesh to listen to the spirit tell me when to stop, not my body. Also, don’t beat yourself up if you feel you overate and are stuffed; it’s okay. Next time, just eat less.
How many meals do I eat a day?
The number of meals you eat is a personal decision between you and the Lord.
- >Some people eat three meals daily as usual, just within what is allowed.
- >Others eat 4-5 small meals a day.
- >And others may skip a meal and just do 2 meals.
We don’t have clear instructions; seek the Holy Spirit on what He wants from you personally.
Personal conviction:We typically juice in the morning, have lunch and dinner, and if I need to, I’ll have a snack in between.
What if I eat something that’s outside what is allowed?
It’s OKAY; keep going. Unless this is your 10th year in a row doing this and you have built up your spiritman, you are still in the training process, which is okay. Just learn from it and keep going.
Personal conviction:The Lord isn’t this judge who is waiting for you to mess up. He is a loving Father who is so excited that you are trying.
FAQ Food Questions for Daniel Fast:
These are some of the most commonly asked food questions; let’s cover them!
Can I eat organic meat?
Meat of any sort is prohibited on Daniel’s fast. No beef, poultry, pork, or seafood is allowed. Personal tip:Some people like tofu and enjoy that. I personally do not, but you can give that a try.
What can I drink?
Water is going to become your best friend! You should drink water nonstop. You can also juice any fruit, vegetable, or combination (do not add sugar, sugar substitute, or honey). You can also freshly squeeze oranges or other fruit.
Personal tip:My favorite drink became freshly squeezed oranges with freshly squeezed pomegranates. I just used this fruitlemon squeezer press.
Can I use condiments?
Most condiments have added sugar and/or dairy, and neither is allowed. Mayo, ketchup, dressings, etc.
Personal favorite:Hummus and oils (olive oil and avocado) become your best friends.
Is popcorn okay?
Yes! Popcorn is excellent as long as it doesn’t have cheese or butter. You want the popcorn to be air or oil-popped. You can add seasoning to the popcorn for flavor.
Personal favorite:I LOVE popcorn seasoned withvegeta; this is so good! You’re welcome for a new favorite.
Is bread allowed?
No, bread is not allowed as it has yeast.
Personal favorite:The only bread we allow ourselves is Ezekial bread found in the grocery store’s freezer section.
Can I have fruit canned in syrup?
No, most canned fruits have a lot of added sugars, and sugars aren’t permitted.
Personal tip: Feel free to use fresh or frozen fruit without added sugar.
Can I make smoothies?
Yes, you can make and enjoy smoothies as long as they are within the ingredients allowed.
What herbs and spices can I have?
You can enjoy salt, pepper, spices, and fresh or dried herbs.
What sauces can I use?
You can indeed be so creative with your combinations. Here are some ideas of what you can have: hummus, chimichurri sauce (without sugar), oils with lemon, guacamole, peanut sauce (without sugar), and so on. You may have to tweak some ingredients to make the recipe work and fit within guidelines.
Is juicing safe?
You can juice just about any fruit, vegetable, or combination. We purchased this juicer for the Daniel fast last year and have loved it.
Personal tip: Juice a double portion so you have enough for a few days.

No caffeine or decaffeinated drinks, not even herbal teas, are allowed as they have caffeine.
Personal tip: I love hot beverages so I’d flavor my hot water; here are some ideas: mint, lemon slices, ginger, fruit slices.
