I never notice a need for moisturizer throughout the rest of the year. In the winter, when the wood stove is burning, and I’m taking long hot baths, my skin gets so dry. This body butter goes on smooth and is so nourishing for the skin.

Anything that you put on your skin can absorb right into your body. That is why I love making my own homemade products. All the ingredients are pure enough to eat. We really shouldn’t put anything on our bodies that we wouldn’t put in our mouths.

For this recipe you only need one part each of four basic ingredients: shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. I also add in essential oils for scent and their amazing health properties.

Cocoa butter has the most delicious chocolate smell. It pairs well with lavender essential oil or wild orange. The smell is amazing!

A note on the ingredients

When I first started making my own personal care and household products, I worried I would never use up all the ingredients. Now I know the same basic ingredients can be used to make so many things!

You can modify this recipe just slightly to make homemade diaper cream and sunscreen. Just add non-nano zinc oxide.

Beeswax can be used to make hand poured candles and DIY lip balm. Get another variation of my DIY All Natural Lavender Cocoa Sunscreen HERE.

I also use cocoa butter to make Homemade Superfood Chocolate.

If you invest in these basic ingredients, they will be put to good use!

Tips For Making DIY Body Butter

  • This makes a really great gift for friends and family – you can find my homemade gift basket here. Check out the printable labels below.
  • Add some zinc oxide to this recipe to make it a sunscreen.
  • You can double or triple this recipe.
  • Be careful using citrus oils, like lemon or orange, since they can make your skin photosensitive. If you do use them, don’t go out in the sun for awhile. Or, simply use this body butter at night.
  • This recipe will last about 3-6 months.

How To Make Whipped Body Butter

1. Melt the coconut oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter in a double boiler over low to medium heat. I just use a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.

2. Put the mixture in the freezer until it is firm. You don’t want it to be completely hard. Just firm enough that when you push your finger into it, the mold stays. (See video)

3. Add in your favorite essential oil.

4. Whip the butter using a stand mixer or handheld mixer until it is light and fluffy. This will take 5-10 minutes.

5. Store in a glass mason jar with a lid. I like to use a wide mouth half-pint mason jar, so I can get the lotion out easily.

FAQs

Why is my homemade body butter not whipping? ›

Your un-whipped fat blend needs to be soft at room temperature; if it's too hard, your body butter won't stay soft and whippy. If your formulation features lots of brittle/hard solid ingredients try reducing the percentage of those for ingredients that are soft solids.

How to make 3 ingredient body butter? ›

Ingredients
  1. 2 parts shea butter.
  2. 1 part coconut oil.
  3. 1 part almond oil (or jojoba or sunflower)
  4. Essential oils (optional)

How do you keep whipped body butter fluffy? ›

Our solution to keep our whipped shea butter soft and fluffy is to add a little bit of jojoba oil to the whipped shea (less than 10% of the mixture). Some people also use coconut oil for the same effect but we prefer jojoba as it has it's own beneficial effects.

What is the difference between whipped body butter and body butter? ›

Body butters themselves won't hydrate the skin, because they don't contain water. So, if your skin is dehydrated, these products may not be the most effective option for you. Whipped body butters melt easily in warm temperatures. You can still use them, but the fluffy, whipped texture isn't there.

What is the best tool for whipping body butter? ›

I like to start with 10 drops of essential oil and then add more as needed if I want the scent to be stronger. Use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or whisk to whip the body butter until it is fluffy and lightens in color.

What is the formula for body butter? ›

What oil is best for body butter? ›

Shea oil – adds just the right amount of smoothness to the more solid shea butter. The two together create a silky smooth body butter. Jojoba oil – I love to use vanilla jojoba oil which is vanilla essential oil in jojoba oil as a carrier oil. You can also use regular jojoba oil or substitute with shea oil.

What is the best emulsifier for body butter? ›

Ritamulse SCG (Emulsimulse, ECOMulse), BTMS-50, or Emulsifying Wax NF will work instead of Glyceryl Stearate (and) PEG-100 Stearate, though they won't feel as nice. BTMS-25 and Olivem 1000 will also work, though I find they thicken up faster and it is harder to make a smooth emulsified body butter with them.

Why does my whipped body butter get hard? ›

But sometimes, as experienced, whipped Shea butter hardens due to long storage durations or colder weather. It also becomes difficult to use and spread on the skin. To prevent whipped Shea butter from hardening due to different circ*mstances, it is always recommended to combine a natural oil with it.

Do you rinse off whipped body butter? ›

The answer, in most cases, is no. Body butter is designed to be left on the skin to work its magic throughout the day or night. Washing it off immediately would negate its purpose and the benefits it can offer to your skin. Deep Hydration: Body butter provides long-lasting hydration.

How to make whipped body butter not greasy? ›

Whipped body butter recipes can be very greasy! The good news is that there's a simple solution for this issue: add arrowroot flour/starch. Arrowroot is a natural starch (used in cooking to thicken soups, sauces, and stir-fry) that will absorb the greasy feel of the butters and oils, without drying out your skin.

What is whipped butter made of? ›

The recipe for homemade whipped butter could not be easier. All you need is a softened, room-temperature stick of butter, a little milk or water, and a hand or stand mixer. Within minutes, you will have delicious, creamy butter that spreads easily over any bread.

Does whipped body butter get hard? ›

If a whipped body butter gets too cold it'll get harder than it's supposed to be; it won't be (as) soft and scoopy anymore. Depending on how cold it gets that could be anything from being semi-firm and a bit spongy to rock hard.

What does truly whipped body butter do? ›
