How do you figure out the feels like temperature? ›

We calculate a 'feels like' temperature by taking into account the expected air temperature, relative humidity and the strength of the wind at around 5 feet off the ground (the typical height of a human face!), combined with our understanding of how heat is lost from the human body during cold and windy days.

The air temperature is the actual temperature outside. The feels-like temperature is how the wind or the humidity combined with the air temperature actually feels like on our skin and affects our health and how we should dress.

At 3 p.m. on 8 July 2003, the city of Dhahran in Saudi Arabia experienced a dewpoint temperature of 35°C (95°F) accompanied by a dry-bulb air temperature of 42°C (108°F). For example, 45F (7C) air feels cold, but 45F (7C) water feels like it's burning your skin. Water has much greater density than air, it immediately destroys most of the insulation provided by your clothing, and it also conducts heat away from your body much faster than air.

The reference humidity level is chosen as a dewpoint of 14C. If the humidity is higher than this reference, the “feels like” temperature will be higher than the temperature and if the humidity is lower than this reference, the “feels like” temperature will be lower than the temperature.

Snowstorms also rely heavily on temperature, but not necessarily the temperature we feel on the ground. Snow forms when the atmospheric temperature is at or below freezing (0°C or 32°F).

Is a wet bulb the same as it feels like? ›

Wet-bulb temperature is a combined measure of heat and humidity—like a “real feel” estimation of heat—intended to represent how effectively sweating can cool a person down.

Temperature may be an objective measurement, but our experience of it is not. Some surprising factors, including psychological and social ones, influence how we perceive temperature and why some places feel hotter or colder than others—even when the temperature outside is identical.

In any case, the real feel temp (in shade) is based on air temperature and humidity and saturated vapor pressure, and physiological effects by testing college age students exposed to different combinations of heat and humidity. There are long formulas for determining these values, so it is best to refer to a chart.
