Mushroom Grow Kit Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do they need any sort of special requirements?

A: Our mushroom grow kits can be grown on countertops, in basem*nts, on windowsills, and more. Just give them a little light, fresh air, and spray them with water and they grow themselves! They prefer a temperature range of 50F - 70F.

Q: How long can I store my kit before starting it?

A: Before shipping, we create a small hole into the airspace in the grow block in order to ship the kits easier. This exposure to fresh air may encourage mushroom growth underneath the plastic liner if the block is left alone for an extended period of time. That being said, mushrooms trying to grow under the grow block’s plastic liner should not prevent a successful grow if the instructions are still followed as written. To help extend the kit’s shelf life prior to starting, keeping it in the dark and at a cool temperature, though not necessarily under refrigeration, is recommended.

Q: What is the white stuff on my grow kit? Has it gone bad?

A: No, it has not gone bad! The white stuff is mycelium, which is the vegetative body of mushrooms. Think of it as the roots to a plants. The mycelium colonizes the substrate block, which is made up of locally sourced sawdust and organic soybean hulls, and once fully colonized the entire grow block will appear white. If there are patches of green mold on the block, then that is a different story, and we will happily send you a new kit or give you a refund.

Q: There is yellow-brown fluid under the plastic. Is this a problem?

No, not at all. The mycelium (the white “mushroom roots” that cover the grow block) in your grow kit is alive and well, and the fluid you see is metabolites being excreted by the mycelium. This is often a sign that the block is ready to fruit and make some mushrooms!

Q: My grow kit came and I noticed a hole at the top of the bag? There also appears to be moisture inside. Is my grow kit bad?

A: No, this is all normal! We puncture a small hole at the top of the bag to release the air to allow for easier packaging. Moisture in the bag is completely normal. The mushroom mycelium (the white “mushroom roots” that cover the grow block) is alive and there is a cycle of evaporation and condensation in the kit.

Q: I made the slits in my grow block and sprayed it. Now there are little mushroom pins growing under the plastic, but not where the slits are. What do I do?

A: As long as there are pins somewhere under the slits too, those will be the ones to grow up and out of the slits. If you see pins somewhere under the plastic, but none that look like they’ll grow through the slit, you can make a slit in the plastic directly above those pins to free them. They should grow completely normally.

Q: MY mushrooms are dry and not growing. What can I do?

A: If you are finding that your mushrooms are drying out at any stage, you can make a humidity tent for your kit. All you have to do is take a plastic bag (clear plastic is a good option as it still let's light through), poke several 1/2” holes in it, and cover the kit with the bag. Then when you spray, you do so onto the inner lining of the bag to maintain higher humidity within the "tent". If you are finding that your mushrooms are elongating their stems, that means they need more fresh air. In this case, lift the bag up a couple of times a day to give the mushroom’s some circulation.

FAQs

What is the shelf life of a mushroom grow kit? ›

Most mushroom kits will store for 3-6 months in the fridge if necessary. To store your kit, keep it in the fridge. This puts the mycelium into hibernation and will prevent it escaping the box early. Don't keep it somewhere it could exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

Do mushroom grow kits need to be refrigerated? ›

After your first harvest, store your grow kit in a cool, dry, and dark place (like your refrigerator!) until you are ready to grow again. When you're ready, remove your substrate bag from its box, flip the bag over to the unused side and cut an'X' similar to the first one you cut in the other side of the bag.

How do I get the most out of my mushroom grow kit? ›

Give your block some fresh air
  1. Take the mushroom block out of the box (and recycle the box!)
  2. Leave the block in the plastic bag.
  3. Place the block cut side up in a shady area where it will receive rainfall.
  4. Check on the block periodically, especially after rain or humid days.

How many times can you use a mushroom grow kit? ›

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests. Once the kit has run out of nutrients and water it will be "spent" and won't produce any more mushrooms.

How often should I water my mushroom kit? ›

Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day.

Are mushroom grow kits worth it? ›

Should You Try a Kit? If you have any interest in growing mushrooms at all, and you aren't ready to do it from scratch, then most definitely yes- you should try a kit! It will give you an idea of how mushrooms grow, and what requirements they need in order to fruit properly.

Should mushroom kits be kept in dark? ›

Many gourmet mushroom grow kits need light to grow, so keep them in a bright spot away from direct sunlight. This allows you to watch your mushrooms grow and some types will double in size every 12-24 hours. It's a great transformation to witness. They'll also absorb that vitamin D, ready for your consumption.

How clean does a mushroom grow room need to be? ›

Keeping Your Growroom Clean

Without dust and particles in the air, your mushrooms will be able to breathe and process their nutrients much more efficiently. In a mushroom cultivation cleanroom, the primary and best way of filtering and sterilizing the air will be through the use of HEPA filters.

Why is my mushroom kit growing mold? ›

Why does mould form? Unfortunately the ideal growing conditions for mushrooms are also inviting to other fungi, including moulds - yuck! If there's any area on the kit that has exposed substrate (if the white mycelium isn't really strong in that area) it could become susceptible to mould.

What speeds up mushroom growth? ›

To initiate fruiting, lowering temperatures and increasing oxygen levels generally encourages mushroom formation. Initiation can be in the form of cold shocking, water shocking or introducing more oxygen by cutting a hole in the bag. them with water as if in a strong rainstorm.

Can I reuse my mushroom grow kit? ›

Yes, you can most definitely reuse mushroom grow kits! Mushroom grow kits are generally designed to give you more than one harvest depending on the species of mushroom inside your growing kit. There is enough water nutrition available in the substrate to give you multiple harvests over a period of 2-10 weeks.

How do you trigger mushroom growth? ›

Fresh air, humidity, light, and temperature are the four main environmental variables that trigger fruiting from fully colonized substrates.

Can mushroom grow kits go bad? ›

Mushroom grow kits can be surprisingly resilient. While we recommend fruiting your grow kit as soon as possible, if you need to, you can store your grow kit in the refrigerator for up to 6 months!

Why is my mushroom kit not growing? ›

Humidity is quite important for mushrooms. If there isn't enough humidity, the mushrooms may slow down and/or stop growing. It would be like if we don't hydrate ourselves on a hot day or when we're exercising – we begin to slow down and not feel too good. Solution: You should mist more often.

Can you over sterilize mushroom substrate? ›

If the blocks are sterilized for too long, they may become over-sterilized. After sterilization, it's important to let the substrate cool before inoculation, which can take up to 8 hours.

Do mushroom grow bags expire? ›

All in one mushroom grow bags: Leave in original packaging. Store your all in one grow bag in a cool and dry location. All in one grow bags can keep for up to 3 months in these conditions. There will be no need to rehydrated or sterilize the products a second time.

Do Back to the Roots mushroom kits expire? ›

There is no expiration date on the Mushroom Farm but we recommend growing it within the first few months for the best results. That said, if you remove the farm from the box and it's firm and covered in a white coating, it's growable. If the farm is dark and mushy, it's very old and won't grow.

How can you tell if a mushroom bag is bad? ›

Appearance alone can tell you a lot when looking at the choices of fungi. If the mushrooms have bruises or dark spots, look slimy and wet, or are slightly darker in color than usual, they are starting to go bad. The surfaces of the mushroom should be dry and appear plump.

What is the shelf life of mushroom packaging? ›

The results revealed that the oyster mushroom samples packed in PET with banana leaves and aluminium foil stored under refrigerated temperature (3-5 °C) maintained the maximum hardness (149.7 gf) up to 16 days of storage period.
