Sur La Table will close more than half its stores across the U.S., including several in the Southland.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Sur La Table will close several Los Angeles locations, including stores in Santa Monica, Woodland Hills, Los Angeles and El Segundo as the company shutters more than half of its stores across the U.S. this month.
The chain is one of many retail companies closing stores in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The company announced in July that it was restructuring and filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing the pandemic as the reason why it planned to permanently close 56 retail locations. The company announced last week that it would close an additional 17 locations.

The Santa Monica location near the Third Street Promenade will close its doors at 301 Wilshire Blvd. at the end of the month. There are several other nearby locations set to close, including the Farmer's Market location on West Third Street in Los Angeles, at Plaza El Segundo in El Segundo and at the Village at Topanga in Woodland Hills.
B Riley Financial’s Great American Group, SB360 Capital Partners and Tiger Capital Group were leading a liquidation sale at the stores.

At the Wilshire Boulevard store Friday, people sifted through the remaining bakeware, food storage and kitchen items. The store has an ongoing sale with in-store discounts up to 30 percent off. A person stood outside the store on Wilshire Boulevard trying to entice drivers to stop their cars and shop. It's one of several businesses to leave the outdoor mall and shopping area in the last several months.
Sur La Table was founded in 1972 in Seattle's Pike Place Market. The retail chain sells high-end kitchen products, including tools, bakeware, cookware, cutlery, electronics, linens and table items, glassware and bar items, food and outdoor supplies.
New owners Marquee Brands and CSC Generation will take over as new owners following the deal.
"Sur La Table has partnered with the world's best chefs and kitchen brands to bring customers trusted tools to make delicious memories," Scott Carpenter, CEO of Retail Solutions at B. Riley's Great American Group, which is soon to be rebranded as B. Riley Retail Solutions, said in a news release. "And with Marquee Brands and CSC Generation as the new owners of Sur La Table, the brand will be revitalized and better positioned to thrive in a post-COVID-19 retail environment."
Sales continue throughout the month, and some locations will also sell items down to the shelves.
"We encourage customers to shop early for the very best selection as the store closing sales will only last through the end of September," Carpenter said. "We are committed to providing customers with the same great in-store experience they have come to expect during this store closing sales event. Safety measures are in place to create a safe and healthy space for our shoppers."
Sur La Table stores reopened under the health and safety guidelines on July 4.
Since the pandemic, shopping trends have changed. Shopping malls are not the same.
“The whole business model of a mall, which is about pulling in as many people as you can and getting them to stay for as long as you can, has just unraveled,” Neil Saunders, managing director of consultancy GlobalData Retail, told USA Today.
