In each generation, there is typically at least one group of Legendary Pokémon that form a trio. Each Trio is seemingly subject to another Legendary Pokémon.

- Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus - Based on three Japanese gods known as kami, with Tornadus based on Fujin, the god of wind, Thundurus on Raijin, the god of thunder, and Landorus on Inari, the fertility god. Landorus is the master of this trio.

Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde - the Aura Trio, led and ruled by Zygarde itself.
Generation VII[]
Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma - the Light Trio, led and ruled by Necrozma itself.
Generation VIII[]
Zacian, Zamazenta, and Eternatus - the Combat trio, led and ruled by Eternatus.
Generation IX[]
Okidogi, Munkidori, and Fezandipiti - the Loyal Three

Trivia[]
- Starting with Rayquaza, the majority of the third mascots had Dragon in their typing and forms. Necrozma almost broke the chain until Ultra Necrozma was introduced. Eternatus continues the chain in Generation 8. In Gen 9 The chain was broken once again with Terapagos who is Normal type in all of it’s forms.
- Most of the third mascot Pokémon are Extraterrestrial or Extradimensional. Zygarde and Terapagos are the only ones who isn't either.
