It's not a very good movie with little actual conflict, but at 2 in the morning on a sleeping pill it was complete bliss.

    Tom Hanks-A-Thon: Film #7

    Save yourself…
I am sinking fast into The Money Pit,
and I don’t want to drag you down with me.
So save yourself while there’s still time!

Tom Hanks and Shelley Long are trapped.

Not by a bad home purchase, but by a one joke premise that repeatedly tortures not only them, but the audience as well.

It doesn’t help that Richard Benjamin thinks he’s directing a live action cartoon that’s packed with cheesy music and exaggerated humor. Throughout the film you’re pummeled over and over again by these incredibly broad sight-gags that you see coming a mile away.

There’s a great moment when Hanks breaks out in a obnoxious bout of mock laughter and while…

shelley long desperately trying to find a working outlet to plug her kettle into to make tea resulting in a rube goldberg chain of events which causes tom hanks to be covered in white paint and to be flung off the roof of his house is a pretty accurate depiction of the lengths I would go to to have my morning cup of tea.

Dumb? Sure. Weird? Yes. Hilarious? ABSOLUTELY! I mean it was the 80’s! A lot of strange films were created within that decade. EVERY character is hilarious in their own way, this movie f*cking funny!

Trust me this movie is actually funny, and most comedies aren’t. This movie deserves to have WAY more of a cult following!

This movie is both endearing and hilarious! Goofy in a purely delightful way. Can love survive “The Money Pit?” 😂 You should watch this if you haven’t when you are in the mood for an over-the-top comedy! 80’s style!

  • Review by Carlo V

An actual horror movie if you've ever done any construction on your old ass house.

  • Review by Wesley Stenzel ★★

Tom Hanks becomes the king of dopey slapstick in The Money Pit. He bumbles his way through his cursed fixer-upper for almost the entire length of the film, providing some stellar visual gags and creative scenarios.

Unfortunately, these jokes are few and far between, and the film feels completely lifeless in every moment when Hanks isn’t being tormented by his demon house. There’s practically no story, and his wife, played by Shelley Long, is annoying, unfunny, and unsympathetic, just like every other person in the movie. A five minute supercut of all the house gags would be a worthwhile watch on YouTube, but the overall movie definitely isn’t.
