The House of the Sun got it’s name from the story of Hina, the demigod Maui’s mother. Hina’s skill was creating cloth out of pounded kapa (bark), but lamented that the sun moved across the sky too quickly for her cloth to dry. So Maui headed to the peak of Mt. Haleakalā & lassoed the sun in an effort to slow it down & lengthen the day.
