Traits are characteristics that each protagonist in The Dark Pictures Anthology have. Each protagonists has six traits that change depending on player decisions. Locked Traits, a mechanic exclusive to Little Hope, are traits that cannot be replaced by normal means and remain until broken.

Each trait is a numerical number that counts how many times that trait has increased, with these traits having a different default starting value for each protagonist. In singleplayer or Movie Night, non-controlled characters that would be controlled in Shared Story make most decisions based on their traits.

Season One[]

Man of Medan

Each character starts off with totally different traits and personalities. These do not fully matter, but shows how their character develops overtime.

Alex

Alex starts off as being Motivated and Insecure. He is very confident and motivated, wanting to achieve an important goal with all his might. However, at the same time, Alex can be insecure, in particular in his relationship with Julia.

Brad

Brad starts off as being Witty and Innocent. He often shows wit in order to get out of situations, such as telling stories or hiding from the enemy. Brad is also innocent and is the nicest and most polite of the group.

Conrad

Conrad starts off as being Foolhardy and Relaxed. He, like a typical rich and slightly spoiled child, can behave quite recklessly and bold, which sometimes annoys the heroes and brings trouble, angering the pirates. However, at the same time, he is very calm and able to remain cool in dangerous situations if the player allows him to be.

Fliss

Fliss starts off as being Impatient and Courageous. She is very impatient and easily annoyed, especially when the other protagonists do something reckless. However, despite her hot temper, Fliss is brave and able to fend for herself.

Julia

Julia starts off as being Excited and Reckless. She is very cheerful and her excitement is often expressed when it comes to good things. However, Julia's excitement can lead to the fact that she can commit reckless acts, just like her brother, which can be a detriment to her personality and well-being if she is not careful.

Little Hope

Traits come into deeper consideration - in addition to the usual traits, locked traits are introduced, which affect the fate of the protagonists. They can accumulate when making special decisions and if the protagonists don't get rid of them by the end, these traits will result to their demise (except for Andrew).

Andrew

Andrew starts off as Anxious and Detached. He is quite nervous and prefers to move at all times. He tries to complete tasks as quickly as possible to avoid danger. However, at the same time, Andrew distances himself from the others and does not get socially involved as often.

His locked traits are: Fearful, Anxious, Uncertain, Resolute, and Detached. They will determine either Andrew believes Mary is innocent of the charges and executions, or believes she is responsible and needs to be stopped.

Angela

Angela starts off as Abrasive and Understanding. She is quite harsh and immediately tells people what she thinks of them, how she can offend them. However, despite this, Angela can show compassion in certain situations and towards certain people most notably Andrew.

Her locked traits are: Derisive, Abrasive, Aggressive, Dismissive, Irritable, and Resentful. They determine whether Angela empathizes with the characters or taunts them.

Daniel

Daniel starts off as Amiable and Defensive. He shows devotion to his friends and always tries to help them. At the same time, in some things, Daniel behaves defensively, such as he may try to get Taylor to confess who he is to her.

His locked trait are: Arrogant, Derisive, Indecisive, Baffled, Aggressive, Fearful, and Reckless. They determine whether Daniel stands up for the weak and defends them from danger, or flees and exposes others to danger.

John

John starts off as Rational and Overbearing. He is rational and thinks logically - so, after the bus crash, John decides to go to the town for help and during demons' attacks makes sure everyone is together. However, John sometimes abuses his status and tries to get others to follow him.

His locked traits are: Dismissive, Reckless, Nervous, Panicked, Uncertain, Indignant, Aggressive, Angry, and Fearful. They determine whether John acts like a real leader and is willing to sacrifice himself or doubts and asks for help from others.

Taylor

Taylor starts off as Headstrong and Sensitive. She is incredibly free-willed about herself and prefers to rebel from authority if she has the audacity to do so. However, underneath the rebellious exterior, she is very sensitive about a lot of things, especially during fights against Angela.

Her locked traits are: Deceitful, Aggressive, Irritable, Dismissive, Derisive, and Fearful. They determine whether Taylor acts with others as a team or neglects them, preferring to act alone.

House of Ashes

Each character starts off with totally different traits and personalities. These do not fully matter, but shows how their character develops overtime.

Eric

Eric starts off as Rational and Insecure. He leads the operation on the target LZ and manages the fortification of the temple, and is also willing to make sacrifices in order to survive, such as cutting the rope with Rachel and shooting/leaving the infected Clarice. However, Eric is also insecure about some things, especially about Caelus, who lead the characters in the temple by mistake, and his relationship with Rachel, who claimed that everything was over between them.

Jason

Jason starts off as Confident and Intolerant. He remains calm in critical situations and even sometimes intercepts Eric's leadership role on both raiding the target LZ and fortifying the temple. However, Jason is not tolerant of Iraqis and refuses to cooperate with them until they have to work together.

Nick

Nick starts off as Romantic and Defensive. He shows romance to Rachel and worries about her, although he is uncomfortable with hiding it from Eric, her husband. Nick also takes care of his comrades and tries to save them, although he doesn't always succeed.

Rachel

Rachel starts off as Commanding and Abrasive. She was the former commander of the operation, which means that Rachel has all the qualities a leader needs - she is able to take care of herself and can sometimes give orders. However, Rachel has a strained relationship with Eric and an intricate relationship with Nick, and can be cold towards both of them.

Salim

Salim starts off as Stubborn and Courageous. He shows great determination to flee and survive for the sake of his son Zain, and is even willing to cooperate with the Americans. Also, Salim is very brave and fights fiercely against the vampires, even capable of killing some of them alone or paired with someone with just a stake.

The Devil in Me[]

Character traits are not listed in The Devil in Me, instead being replaced by introductory videos shown in Crew.

Trivia[]

  • Some characters throughout the anthology share similar traits:
    • Fliss and Salim are both courageous, where they show a great amount of courage in dangerous situations.
    • Alex and Eric are both insecure, where they show that they are uncomfortable with something, mostly in their relationships with a beloved (In Alex's case - Julia, in Eric's case - Rachel).
    • Eric and John are both rational, where both try to see different ways around one thing instead of blindly following one path and command the group.
    • Daniel and Nick are both defensive, where they get along well with friends and comrades and are ready to protect and save them.
    • Angela and Rachel are both abrasive, where they always express their opinion, even if it may offend someone.
  • A similar trait system is present in Until Dawn, but with only six traits that increase or decrease and cannot be replaced.
