I missed what the catalyst was.
Quote:
- On June 30, 2022, amid the broader early-2020s NCAA conference realignment, UCLA and USC announced plans to leave the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference starting in 2024.[3][4]
- On July 27, 2023, Colorado announced it would be leaving the conference to re-join the Big 12 starting in 2024.[5]
- On August 4, 2023, Oregon and Washington announced plans to also join the Big Ten in 2024.[6]
- On the same day, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah announced plans to follow Colorado to the Big 12, which would have left the Pac-12 with just four member schools.[7]
- On September 1, 2023, the Atlantic Coast Conference voted to add Stanford and Cal for the 202425 season, dropping conference membership to just Oregon State and Washington State.[8]

Money. They spent a bunch of it and didn't make enough of it due to believing fully owning and controlling their own network of networks was smarter than partnering with a media content provider. Plus their time zone isn't friendly to national watchers and they exposed that fact by trying to go national with not one but seven satellite and cable "slots". It was a beautiful accomplishment but had all the value of a single-school equivalent by a certain school west of College Station a pleasant drive past Brenham or Caldwell and Elgin or Bastrop.
But mainly it was a lot of arrogance and hubris by the schools and former commissioner Larry Scott. And, lest we forget, Texas. They deserve a ton of credit for sending us to the SEC and putting a stake in the heart of the Pac network which might have worked fine with a Texas/Oklahoma network for Texas, A&M, OU, Tech, Oklahoma State, and Colorado.

They played football like the AAC and wanted to be paid like the SEC.

The PAC was guilty of a high level of arrogance. They had an offer from ESPN that was comparable to Big 12/ACC money but turned it down, demanding $50mil per team. ESPN walked and their next best offer was from Apple TV for $20 mil plus potential earn-outs for higher ratings.

But he was seen dining at all the right places, with all the right people in San Francisco.

Remember when Larry Scott was lauded as the best conference commissioner in the land? Or at worst, second best behind Mike Slive?
Whoops.

Question:
Why is everyone leaving the Pac-12 all of a sudden?

Oh they did. It was a deal with Apple on streaming services... where the schools themselves would have to market their own deals and produce their own TV broadcasts (Apple wouldn't do it).
It was the most inane, PeeWee league TV deal you can imagine. One AD (or was it a president?) likened it to selling Girl Scout cookies. Which, they're delicious, but a major football conference shouldn't have a TV deal that is literally worse than one given to the Sun Belt, WAC, or MAC.
Only days after the deal was announced schools started bailing because it was so ridiculous.
