5 of the most popular Dutch sauces - nether-netherland (2024)

If you read my last blog post, you’ll know exactly which Dutch snacks you need to get your hands on the next time you’re in the Netherlands. You may also remember how much sauce the Dutch like to smother their food in. Today I’m going to be telling you exactly which sauces top the list and the 5 most popular condiments in the Netherlands, with a bonus right at the end to pay homage to my own favourite sauce.

Quick Find

Mayo

Look, there’s simply no other sauce the Dutch like more. Mayonnaise is the Queen of the sauces. The first born child of every Dutch household.

You’ll find so many brands and types of mayo on the shelves in the supermarket that it becomes completely overwhelming, although you’ll find the high brow Dutchies reaching for the Calvé and nothing less. There’s even some sort of yoghurt mayo which I guess is supposed to be… creamier? Healthier? I’m unsure. The only fact I’m sure of is that this sauce is like crack to the Dutch.

Curry Ketchup

I don’t know if this is even a thing in the UK, and if it is, I spent almost 27 years missing out. Curry ketchup is a lesser crack to the Dutch, and it’s bloody delicious.

Waaaaay better than regular Tommy K (although I see you peeping at me in the picture there Heinz and I respect the Dutch for having such strong morals and stocking Heinz), curry ketchup is everything it says on the tin: a little spicy, a little herby, a little delicious. Try this with a cheese toastie if you want to have your mind blown.

Fritessaus

Literally ‘fry sauce’, I dunno guys, this is pretty popular over here, and to me it’s way better than mayo. The first time I ever tried this sauce was in the McDonald’s at Schipol airport, where I finished the whole pot and asked for more.

Slightly sweeter than mayo (ah, that’s why I like it), fritessaus is mayonnaise based, but with added lemon juice, finely ground capers, and anchovies. It’s a soft yellow colour and super smooth. It’s apparently also healthier than mayonnaise if you can believe it?

Mosterd

Mustard, or mosterd, in this case, is super popular in the Netherlands. Always served on the side of popular snacks such as bitterballen, kroketten, and even frikandellen, mostard is a delicacy that I’ve not got round to enjoying just yet.

Mosterd is so popular in fact, that they even turned it into a soup (which I also don’t particularly like, even though it’s super sweet).

Satésaus

Imported from Indonesia back in the days when the Dutch colonised part of it, satésaus is a super popular sauce all over the Netherlands that’s usually served alongside chicken.

Sweet and delicious, this is a creamy, yet sometimes crunchy sauce that can be made as hot as you like to give your meal a kick. It’s awesome, and delicious, and I’m incredibly glad I get to incorporate peanut butter into almost every meal I eat.

Star rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Joppiesaus

Joppiesaus has my heart. This sweet, yellow, onion-y, curried sauce is the best sauce to ever grace the earth. I will eat it with anything, and it’s the perfect addition to fries, hamburgers, kroketten, frikandellen – the lot (in my opinion).

Named after the woman who invented it, who was also called Joppie, the recipe is actually top secret, although many have tried to recreate it and come up with pretty exceptional versions.

Joppiesaus is so famous over here that the crisp make Lay’s (Walkers but without Gary Lineker) have a Joppiesaus flavoured packet.

Which one of these condiments are you dying to get your hands on? Are there any Dutchies out here who can add to the list? Let me know in the comments!

Tot de volgende keer! Liefs xxx
