You aren’t alone in savoring the last bite of a delicious dish only to realize you’d happily devour another serving. So, here’s a guide to politely requesting more food at restaurants whenever you crave for more portion.
- Timing is Key: Choose the right moment to make your request. Ideally, you shouldn’t flag down your server the moment your plate is empty, or when they are busy attending to other tasks. It is best to wait for your server to finish taking your initial order or delivering your first course. Tact requires you to wait until they come to check on your satisfaction.
- Express Satisfaction: One approach that works very well is to compliment the dish. For instance, “This fried rice is amazing! I wouldn’t mind another serving, if that’s possible.” You can also be specific by mentioning that you’d like more of a specific element. An example is: “I especially loved the moi moi. Could I get a bit more on the side?” And if the restaurant accommodates your request for additional food, be sure to express your gratitude. A sincere “Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!” acknowledges their effort and ensures a positive interaction.”
- Be Polite and Respectful: Being polite when making requests at restaurants goes a long way. A simple “please” and “thank you” can work wonders. Waitstaff are more likely to accommodate your request if you approach them with a friendly demeanor.

This tactic allows you to try a variety of items without the need for individual extra servings. And since family-style portions are meant to be shared, you can politely ask for seconds if there’s enough to go around.
- Offer to Pay: While some restaurants charge for additional portions, others may be happy to provide extra food at no additional cost. And if you’re willing to pay for the extra food, don’t hesitate to offer. So it’d be courteous to ask, “Would it be possible to get an extra serving of jollof rice? I’d be happy to pay for it.” Please avoid insisting on extra servings or substitutions if your request cannot be accommodated due to restaurant policy. Instead, consider ordering another dish or enjoying what’s already on your plate.
