What happened to Hellmann's vegan mayonnaise? ›

Hellmann's has rebranded a product to make it more inclusive – changing the name of its vegan mayonnaise to plant-based mayo.

Made with canola oil, Hellmann's® Vegan has an amazing wholesome taste. Hellmann's® Vegan is made without eggs and is certified Vegan by Vegan Action.

Once opened, all Hellmann's products should be refrigerated.

Hellmann's and Best Foods are American brand names that are used for the same line of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, sauce, salad dressing, condiments and other food products. They have been owned by the British multinational company Unilever since 2000.

Vegan mayo can also be a good source of healthy fats, depending on the type of oil used. For example, avocado oil is high in monounsaturated fats, which can help reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol levels.

Vegan mayo is generally a bit healthier than egg-based or non-vegan mayo, containing less saturated fats and Vegenaise contains almost no cholesterol, which can't be said in the case of an original jar of Hellman's.

Vegan mayo is a helpful, healthy alternative to the classic, and I really do stand by my assertion that the taste is almost exactly the same. You'd need some super-human taste buds to tell the difference. Or an egg allergy, I guess. Breaking out in hives would certainly give it away pretty quick, come to think of it.

Typically, an unopened jar of vegan mayonnaise can last up to three months past its 'sell by' date if stored in a cool, dark, and dry environment like your pantry. Once it's opened, it should be consumed within 1-2 months and always be kept in the refrigerator.

Why don't restaurants refrigerate mayonnaise? ›

Many restaurants use mayonnaise products that are specifically blended to be safe at room temperature for longer periods of time, or even to be shelf-stable after opening. They also tend to go through the product at a much more rapid rate than a home cook, so they may only be storing their opened mayo for a day or two.

Vegenaise may remain unrefrigerated (up to room temperature) for 24 hours. However, it is recommended you store Vegenaise on the door of your refrigerator, or anywhere in the refrigerator away from the fan. It should never be frozen. If Vegenaise is stored too cold, the emulsion can break, and separation can occur.

Heinz has discontinued its Vegan Salad Cream to “meet changing culinary trends and tastes”. The condiments giant used X (formerly Twitter) to confirm the product had “recently been discontinued” after a shopper complained she could not find it “anywhere” in a post.
