@deepak: "Did" is for an action already completed, it is in the past. "Do", in your sentence, is unnatural, but it asks what will be done in the future, "What /will/ you eat for lunch today" is natural.

'What did you eat for lunch today?' is when the person you're asking already have lunch. (你问的人已经吃了午餐。)

"What do you eat for lunch today?" (是不对的。)

It should be "What do you have for lunch today?" (这才对。这代表你正在问一个还没吃午餐的人。)

This means that you're asking them before they have lunch.

@deepak: What did you eat for lunch today? --> you ask this when the person already ate lunch,
The other question sounds better if you say:"What are you going to have for lunch today?----> you ask this when the person hasn't eaten.

I hope this helps.
Good luck!!
