Learn all about our products, ingredients, and product usage in the Frequently Asked Questions section.

Can I drink sweetened condensed milk?

It is a ready-to-use product so it may be consumed without any other preparation. You can add it to everyday items like in your coffee, on toast with cinnamon, on fruit or yogurt, and in any way you see fit.

Can the color of the sweetened condensed milk vary?

Yes, it should have an off-white color. However, as the product ages it may darken in color and thicken. As long as the Best If Used By date is still current, the product can still be used. The change in color or texture should not affect recipe results.

Does Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk contain gluten?

No, this brand is verified “gluten-free” per the established U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s criteria.

Ingredient Screening: The ingredient cannot contain gluten sources such as wheat, rye, barley or their derivatives or hybrids. We also review for the presence of oats.

Testing: The product must be tested to verify that it contains less than 20 parts per million. We also review for the presence of oats.

Manufacturing Procedures: In addition, facilities that manufacture verified “gluten-free” products must have a comprehensive gluten management program. All equipment used in the manufacture of products containing any gluten or oat source must be thoroughly cleaned prior to producing a product that is “gluten-free”. These procedures must be validated and inspected after each clean-up.
For the most up-to-date information on allergens, please call or e-mail our Consumer Customer Service Team.

How do I store unused sweetened condensed milk?

We recommend you store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It should keep in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

How long can I keep Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk on my pantry shelf?

Unopened and stored in a cool, dry area, our milk will last for about two years. Please refer to the Best If Used By date on the bottom of the can.

If my recipe calls for Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk, is there a substitute I can use?

You can substitute with Fat Free sweetened condensed milk if you want a lower fat version of your recipe. We do not recommend substituting with evaporated milk or filled milk as they do not contain sugar and your recipe will not turn out the same.

Is it safe to boil my can of sweetened condensed milk to make caramel sauce?

No. For safety reasons, we do not recommend heating a can of our condensed milk, opened or unopened. The current can is not designed to withstand high temperatures. Instead, please follow these instructions for making Homemade Caramel.

What is the difference between the Sweetened Condensed Milk, Filled Milk, and Evaporated Milk?

Sweetened Condensed Milk: Whole milk combined with beet sugar or cane sugar, with about 60% of the water removed.

Filled Milk: Evaporated milk with the butterfat removed and replaced with soy oil. It begins as whole milk which has had the butterfat removed (or skimmed) and replaced with soy oil. The mix of skim milk and soy oil is then evaporated.
Evaporated Milk: Evaporated milk is fresh, whole milk with about 50% of the water removed. The milk is “evaporated” by removing enough water so that it will make whole milk when diluted with an equal amount of water.

Where can I find coupons for Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk?

From time to time, we do offer coupons in coupon inserts through the newspaper or by mail, as well as online. We also may partner with local retailers and grocery stores to provide coupons either in-store, through their advertising circulars, or on their websites.

Why does my 14oz can of Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk only measure out to 10oz in a measuring cup?

Sweetened condensed milk is measured by weight, not fluid ounces, because of the product thickness. It does not measure the same as what we normally think of when measuring a regular liquid such as water or regular milk because of its density. If you take one fluid cup of water and one fluid cup of sweetened condensed milk and set them on scales side by side, you will find that the sweetened condensed milk weighs more than the water.

When poured into a liquid measuring cup, one 14oz can (shown as “Net Weight”) of sweetened condensed milk is 10 liquid ounces. Most recipes call for one 14oz. can of sweetened condensed milk, but some call for a smaller amount like 1/2 a cup or a 1/4 cup. Other examples of foods that are measured by weight are regular yogurts, jams and jellies, honey, caramel sauce and corn syrup. This article also has a great explanation of measurements!
